My second night in Nepal, I slept a bit better, but still woke to the bell ringing by the worshippers at the shrine just outside my window. I was checking out of the hotel today, and moving to the town of Dulikel from where my volunteering work will be based.
With the gifts I bought yesterday my backpack was already pretty heavy. I had to carry the bag to my ‘other’ hotel for the same basic breakfast, and from there I lugged my pack to the Fire and Ice Restaurant, the meeting point for our the Habitat for Humanity volunteer group.
At the agreed meeting point were two of my fellow volunteers, Scott and Noel. There was a lot of confusion about who else should be at there, who was meeting us and when we were going. The keyword for the day is confusion. It was a slow process, but we eventually made it to Dulikel about an hour away, and our hotel The Dhulikhel Mountain Resort.
The three of us had a good catch-up with the English volunteer team who are also staying in our hotel, and wondered when anyone else from the Aussie group would arrive. Eventually, most of them did, just in time for the bus taking us to the opening night’s dinner.
The opening dinner was an interesting evening. We had to scout around the local shops to find some warm beers before settling down to enjoy the night’s entertainment. As true Aussies abroad we made more noise than our size, quickly getting to know each other. The entertainment was pretty poor but maybe about as expected for Nepal. We had too many beers considering we had to start work tomorrow, a sign of the week to come.
